School Notes
  • Academy students exclusively take regularly-scheduled University classes taught by University professors that earn concurrent high school and university credit, thus allowing students to complete four years of education in two. Academy students may choose from the full range of courses offered at the University; because of this, Academy staff is able to place students in classes according to their levels of ability and preparation. For example, some students have begun their math sequences with Calculus III, a University junior-level course, or beyond. This arrangement permits greater depth in student coursework and the ability to pursue individual interests and passions.
  • Academy students have the opportunity to conduct original research, either with a professor or individually. In fact, many of our students have made research presentations at regional and national conferences bore graduating from high school. Three former Academy students have received Goldwater Scholarships, the most prestigious national award for math and science, while still in high school due to their taking full advantage of the exceptional opportunities available at UWG.
  • UWG has the only Honors College in the State of Georgia; the Academy is a component of the Honors College, and our students are eligible for all the benits of the College: small class sizes that span all disciplines; mentoring relationships with professors; a peer group of other academically oriented students; and early registration for classes.
  • Many activities occur within the Academy residence hall, and Academy students are part of the fabric of university life and may participate, with two exceptions (Greek social fraternities and sororities and NCAA athletics), in all campus activities including intramurals, student government, band and music ensembles, the campus newspaper, university clubs, Model UN, and Quiz Bowl. In addition to these activities, students are free to use campus athletic facilities, the performing arts center, and the university library.
  • Academy students live in a newly renovated and award winning residence hall on UWG&apos&aposs campus. In the residence hall, males and females live on separate wings and enjoy age-specific educational and social programs that are dedicated to developing well-rounded, more complete students. Along with programming, residential rules and regulations are consistent with the needs of younger scholars.
  • *Tuition is $0 for Georgia residents (in-state tuition, $1,280 per semester, plus fees and a $150 book allowance is paid by the ACCEL Program, administered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission to provide participating Georgia high school students with financial assistance toward the cost of postsecondary coursework). Room, board, and books are approximately $2,750 per semester (totaling the $5500 listed above in the Finances Section). Out-of-state tuition is $5,121 per semester plus room, board, and books ($2,750 per semester), or $15,742 per year; however, a number of out-of-state tuition waivers are available, which reduce the yearly cost to $8,060. Financial aid opportunities include need based aid, University Presidential Scholarships, University General Scholarships, and Advanced Academy Scholarships.
  • The Academy sponsors two one-week summer camps, called Young Scholar Institutes, that are available for rising 7th and 8th graders. One week focuses on math and science while the other week focuses on the arts and humanities. During these campus, students get hands-on experience and learn directly from college faculty while living on campus.
  • Application deadline is rolling for Fall admission, however students are encouraged to apply early; deadline for University Full Scholarships is February 15th. Academy need and merit-based scholarship deadline is July 9th. Entrance Requirements are as follows: 1150 minimum SAT (Reading Comp & Math) with a 580 verbal/critical reading and 530 math, or Composite minimum 25 ACT with a 25 English and 22 math. In addition, students must have a 3.5 GPA (as computed by Academy formula which includes academic courses only)
  • Younger students with exceptional abilities may be admitted at a younger age.
