What are the Minimum Requirements for all ECE applicants?

The ECE Department looks for all applicants to be able to meet the following minimum criteria:

GPA: Minimum Grade Point Average: 3.5/4.0 or above

Class Standing: Student should be in the Top 5% of their class or above

GREs: 500-Verbal, 750-Quantitative, 750/5.0-Analytical.

TOEFL: 105-web based, 250-computer based, 600-paper based.

Please note, however, that the admission decision is not based only on GPA and standard test scores; we look at a wide variety of factors. If you have slightly lower scores or GPA but have other strengths that mitigate the weaknesses in the above quantitative metrics, we would encourage you apply.

The minimum graduate admission requirements are:

1. A bachelor s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution.

2. A satisfactory scholastic average, with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) if you attended an American university or a university that uses a similar 4.0 scale.

3. The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination. (GRE)

I have a B.S. in engineering. Can I apply to the Ph.D. program directly?

Yes. Applicants whose ultimate degree goal is the Ph.D. should indicate this on their application by marking M.S./Ph.D. or Ph.D. as the degree goal. The statement of purpose should rlect this goal. Applicants who already have an M.S. degree from another institution should apply directly to the Ph.D. program.

What is the minimum TOEFL score I need to be considered for admission?

The minimum TOEFL score required by U.C. Berkeley for graduate admission is 570 on the paper and pencil test, 230 on the computer based test and 68 on the iBT. Applicants with a score below this will not be admitted.

International applicants appointed as a Graduate Student Instructor must pass the English language proficiency exam (with a minimum score of 50) bore starting their appointment. The Test of Spoken English (TSE) is given by the Educational Testing Service in your home country.

BTW: I did not find the minimum requirement for G, but I found that most of their current students got scores like:

1) TOEFL Score: 270, Essay rating: 6.0 GRE Score: Verbal 690, Quantitive 800

2) GRE : 2380 / 2400 Verbal : 780 / 800 Analytical : 800 / 800 Quantitative : 800 / 800. TOEFL : 280 / 300.

3) GRE Score 2340 Verbal 740 Quantitative 800
