　　为了看懂这道题，我们先来梳理一下这道题的层次：

　　On a scale that measures the intensity of a certain phenomenon

　　这一个分句由On引导，that后面引导的那个从句修饰的是scale(刻度)，给大家解释了这个刻度的用途，是用来测量一个特定现象的。

　　a reading of n+1 corresponds to an intensity that is 10 times the intensity corresponding to a reading of n

　　这一句是主句，较复杂，要读懂一定要学会看对应关系。这一句最重要的是一个10倍的关系，很多同学都在头痛是哪两个成分有着倍数对应，其实，中间的内容才是倍数的对应结构，如下：

　　a reading of n+1 corresponds to an intensity that is 10 times the intensity corresponding to a reading of n

　　所以说，其实这一句话中，是两个intensities(强度)的对应(corresponding)。心中有了这个概念之后，再扩展就比较容易了。

　　接下来，第一个intensity对应的是什么?是a reading of n+1的对应。(在这里reading是读数的意思)第二个intensity对应的是a reading of n。

　　所以说，这句话的意思是读数n+1的intensity是读数n的intensity的10倍。

　　接下来，到了本题的最后一句，我们也来给它分个层次：

　　the intensity corresponding to a reading of 8 is how many times as great as the intensity corresponding to a reading of 3

　　根据这个层次分析和上一句的分析，我们可以知道这道题问的是第一个intensity是第二个intensity的多少倍?再细分下来，第一个intensity是读数为8的intensity，第二个intensity是读数为3的intensity。所以这道题问的就是读数为8的intensity是读数为3的intensity的多少倍。
