　　Superficial Parallelism vs Actual Parallelism

　　Do not assume that all verbs and verb forms(可能是-ing表伴随、结果，-ed表修饰等) in a sentense must be parallel.

　　Watch out for Linking verbs(重点)

　　Be, appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain, represent, resemble, seem, smell, sound, stay, taste, turn.

　　Treat any linking verb as a parallel marker.Make subject and the object parallel.

　　Eg. The bouquet of flowers WAS a giving of love. 错

　　The bouquet of flowers WAS a gift of love. √

　　You must also ensure that the two sides of the linking verb are parallel in meaning.

　　Eg. Upon being nominated, this politician REPRESENTS a step forward in urban-rural relations in this country. 错

　　The nomination of this politician REPRESENTS a step forward in urban-rural relations in this country. √

　　Be用于进行时和被动语态时，do not look for parallelism in these uses of Be.

　　Chapter 11 parallelism Extra(重点)

　　Avoid making concrete nouns and action nouns parallel.

　　⑴ simple gerund phrases:nouns on the outside, verbs on the inside(就整句话而言，划线部分是名词，就划线部分而言，-ing部分相当于一个动词)

　　Eg. Playing football is very interesting.

　　⑵ complex gerund phrases:the –ing gerund form is made fully into a noun; in fact, it is often preceded by articles(a, an, the) or adj..The object is put into an of-prepositional phrase(eg. the running of marathons) or placed in front of the –ing form(eg. marathon running)

　　Simple gerund phrases are never parallel to complex gerund phrases. Only compex ones can be parallel to action nouns.

　　If an appropriate action noun already exists in English, then avoid creating a complexgerund phrase. Instead, use the pre-existing action noun.

　　Eg. The rebels demanded the withdrawal of government forces from disputed regions AND RELEASING certain political prisoners. 错

　　The rebels demanded the withdrawal of government forces from disputed regions AND THE RELEASING OF certain political prisoners. 错

　　The rebels demanded the withdrawal of government forces from disputed regions AND THE RELEASE OF certain political prisoners. √
