　　Chapter 2 Grammar Meaning

　　You should not change the meaning that the author intends.

　　The priciple of “concision” is a preperence, not a rule. Never consider concision except as a last resort—if you are down to 2 choices and you cannot make up your mind any other way.

　　Most instances of meaning errors fall into one of three major categories:

　　⑴ Choose you words

　　⑵ Place your words

　　⑶ Match your words

　　Choose you words

　　Occasionally, GMAT tries to pull a trick on you by switching a particular word and its cousin.

　　Aggravate: worsen Aggravating: irritating

　　loss in: decline in value Loss of: no longer in possession of

　　Mandate: command have a mandate: have authority from voters

　　Native of: person from native to: species that originated in

　　Rate of: speed or frequency of rates for: prices for

　　Rise: general increase 不及物动词

　　raise: a bet or a salary increase in American English 及物动词

　　will: certain may: uncertain

　　must: absolutely necessary, a legally binding obligation

　　should: moral obligation, not likelihood eg. The train should arrive now. 错

　　认真体会：Actual: If Chris and Jad met, they DISCUSSED math.

　　Hypothetical: If Chris and Jad met, they WOULD DISCUSSED math.

　　(Pay attention to the original sentence’s helping verbs. Only change them if the original sentence is obviously nonsensial.)

　　Place you words

　　Be ware of words that move from one position to another. The placement of a single word can alter the meaning of a sentence.

　　Look out especially for short words (such as only and all ) that quantify nouns or otherwise restrict meaning.

　　Pay attention to overall words order. All the words in a sentence could be well-chosen, but the sentence could still be awkward or ambiguous.

　　仔细体会：The council granted the right to make legal petition TO CITY OFFICIALS.(Did the city officials receive the right to make legal petitions? Or did someone else receive the right to make petitions to the officials?)

　　The council granted CITY OFFICIALS the right to make legal petitions. √

　　The right to make legal petitions TO CITY OFFICIALS was granted by the council. √

　　Finally, check the overall word order for unnecessary inversions. To make sense of an inverted order, flip the subject and the verbs.

　　Match your words

　　Subject and verb must make sense together.(in number, logical implications)

　　Avoid Redundancy

　　Rise and increase, sum and total, drop and decrease, after and subsequently, it is possible that and may, in schoolwork and academic

　　Pay attention to expressions of time. It si easy to sneak two redundant time expressions into an answer choices( especially if one expression is in the non-underlined part, or if the two expressions do not look like each other):

　　PAST: previously, formerly, in the past, bore now

　　PRESENT: now, currently, presently, at present

　　YEARLY: annual, each year, a year(… a year)

　　Concision

　　Concision is a dangerous tool.

　　9. SC 从语法角度(平行，以致，时态等)判断的题目少难度适中，从逻辑角度(修饰语的位置，修饰语的形式选择，逻辑清晰)的占了大多部分，难度可想而知。大家想想办法吧

　　根据语义，见第8只

　　10. say that``and that``

　　我记得say后面可不加that，但目测这题的考点是and前后平行

　　11. 介宾的to A and to B

　　注意平行即可
