The rigorous, college preparatory program rlects the latest understanding of how girls learn. The classroom environment allows for discussion and collaborative work between teachers and students. The curriculum blends the classics with modern and world perspectives, integrates technology with traditional teaching methods, and offers Advance Placement courses in 15 disciplines. Girls are encouraged to share their ideas, take risks, lead, ask questions, and pursue their personal best in an environment devoid of excessive competitiveness. Faculty members serve as formal and informal advisors to students and meet regularly with students to provide one-on-one support and guidance. Madeira girls are academically prepared to succeed at colleges and universities appropriate to their individual talents and interests.

The boarding program at Madeira places importance on its level of guidance and caring for boarding students as they learn the crucial skill of living with others. House Adults and campus residents provide daily direction and supervision in the dorms. Students take an active leadership role within the dorms and serve as mentors and role models. Each of the six dorms houses approximately 28 students and is equipped with laundry facilities, a computer lab, and wireless access. On Wednesdays, students and faculty come together for a amily-style seated dinner in the new Dining Hall.

Weekends at Madeira are unique and lively. Our new Student Center/Dining Hall is the center of activity and provides an informal space for relaxing, spending time with friends. The Student Center includes a pool table, stereo system, plasma-screen television, and DVD player. Off-campus weekend activities, scheduled by the Dean of Students Office, include historical and cultural exploration, coed mixers with area schools, sporting events, and local shopping outings. Both boarding and day students participate in the activities sponsored by the Dean of Students Office.

Founder Lucy Madeira believed that young women should be empowered to make positive change within the school and wider community. One of the first schools in the Washington, DC area to introduce a student government, the Madeira student government remains student-based and student-run. The student government helps maintain an fective channel of communication among the students, administration, and faculty, and acts as an advisory board to the Headmistress. Opportunities to participate in student government exist at all grade levels.

Campus facilities include a 32,000 sq. ft athletic facility with basketball and volleyball courts, indoor competition size pool, dance/aerobic studio and full weight room. Other sports facilities include 8 tennis courts, 3 playing fields, 49-stall barn, indoor riding arena, and extensive riding and hiking trails. Huffington Library houses 22,000 volumes, 100 periodicals, 9 on-line databases, A.V. room and classroom space. The Performing Arts Center includes a 500-seat proscenium theater, drama rehearsal space, scene shop, dance studios, private vocal and instrumental studios and an art gallery.
