Speakout, Stand up, Step forward

“To be a qualified citizen, never should you ignore the darknessand unjust in society, once you aware the existence of them, you should speakout your thoughts clearly, stand up bravely, and step forward responsibly.”

“11 years of study, 8 schools, 4 cities, 2 countries, andseparated parents.” Too many complex human relations, too many schools and toolong a journey have matured me too early.

Because I&apos&aposm interested in communicating with different sorts ofpeople, I started to focus on work in the public sphere. This led me to be oneof the earliest users of Shenzhen Middle School&apos&aposs online bulletin-board systemcalled Tieba. On Tieba, we debate, proclaim our belis and criticize negativeactions taken by school or government. With the appearance of many valuableposts, Tieba grew vigorously.

After a series of bureaucratic problems on the site, however, itwas almost closed down. Finally, in November of 2008, I was elected the Tiebaadministrator. This was the start of a “Golden Age” for Tieba. But after oneyear, I, too, was forced to resign from the head of Tieba due to school’spressure.

The fact was that a teacher, whose name is Liu Kexin, was facingnumerous criticisms from students and parents on Tieba. With anger andarrogance, he asked me to delete those posts about him and to prohibit usersfrom criticizing him and other teachers. To dend the freedom of speech, myanswer was “No”. Then he exerted pressure on school via his connections, whichmeans “guanxi” in municipal government. School obeyed and asked me to deletethe posts or they won’t let any teacher to write recommendations for me anymore, I didn’t obey, but resigned.

What to do? Shut up? Or keep speaking and fighting in publicsphere?

Shenzhen Middle School, where the most progressive educationalrormation of China is taking place, needs Shenzhongers not only to watch, butalso to involve in. Under this circumstance, with courage and love for freepress, I established Nirvana Weekly with my friends.

Nirvana Weekly is not an ordinarymagazine, but the first and the only fully independent magazine operates byhigh school students. We do never ask the help of school or government, and allthe money was come from editors, donators and sponsors. The essential goal of NirvanaWeekly is to be independent,free, objective and liberal; we do know that this might be impossible for mediain China, however, since we have the chance and passion to chase our dream, whynot give a try?

Bore the Revolution of 1911, Chen Shaobai, the director of ChinaDaily in Hong Kong, said “The fire of the revolution is breaking out! Till thenwill the China society earthshaking! A new world is coming! Please think, sucha tremendous battle originates here! And you, are one of the pioneers of us!”

Here and now, I want to say: “One hundred years passed, ‘ademocratic and free China’ is still a dream. However, as more and more Chineseyoungsters start to call for democracy and freedom, a new world is coming! Andwe, the editors of Nirvana Weekly,are pioneers of this campaign!”

To speak out, I’m no longer a member of “silent majority.”

To stand up, I’m no longer a fighter in the shadow.

To step forward, I’m no longer a boy who is easily to be deated.

The development of human society has its rule. The whole worldwould come to democratic at the end, and China won’t be an exception. Who willchange this ancient nation? The answer is “qualified citizens”. And I, as adreamer and practicer who has a strong sense of mission and love for thenation, will be a pioneer of them.
