Note: the guidelines are similar to those of academic honors
*In no circumstances may activities count in both categories!
Diversity/Other considerations:
African American = +8, Hispanic/Latino = +5, Native American = +16 (!)
Underrepresented state = +3; in-state may have lower admit standards
Very poor background (no college for parents, horrible school district) = +5
Legacy: +2, unless the college does not give prerence
Athletic recruit: +3-12, depending on your position on the coach’s list.
Essays: this is an entirely subjective matter, so it is very hard to assign points to. If you wrote a 5-paragraph essay on a bland topic, you will get 0 pts. If your essay either is 1) very well-written, or 2) shows a desirable personality (e.g. motivated, caring, considerate), then add 4-6 points. Be honest here, but if you think that your essay is average; that is, with good grammar, a voice that is mostly your own, and that illustrates something about your character, you will probably get 2 points.
Recommendations: you can’t even see them, so obviously there’s no way to evaluate them. If you’ve been a very quiet and boring person in class, add 0 pts. If you believe that the teacher can highlight some of your interesting contributions in discussions, add 2-3 pts, depending on the extent and quality of your participation. If the instructor knows you out of the class context for either an extremely positive personality or academic strength, and you are sure that he/she will write it in the letter, add 5 pts.
Interview: again, you will never know what the interviewer really thought about you. If you did one, you can probably add 1 point (for commitment alone). If the session really did go badly, then you may have to subtract up to 2 points. On the other hand, if you are convinced that the evaluator had a high opinion on any of your traits, then you can add about 3 points.
Technology institutions: double the scores of all science/math related achievements, and discount all non science/math points from “music/sports” and “other extracurriculars” by 50%.
