1): My advice to prospectives is to know what type of dorm you're getting into. Honestly, if you're not living at home, that's where all of your friends will be made...that and your recitations. Also, there are small group environments that are available on campus throughout; getting involved in the smaller groups are excellent because you get to know people so well.
2): CU Boulder is a good school but not a great school. It is very large (campus and student body wise), but not diverse unless you include the football team. You can get lost in the crowd if you do not actively stay in the spotlight, that is going to all the parties on the hill, that is, if you know the right people. Otherwise, you will spend the whole night looking for a party and never finding one.
3): Excellent, ski and party school. If you are a Business major, Engineer, Architect, or Journalist you will get a pretty valuable degree. Any other degree (that is any degree in the Arts and Sciences school) you are screwed; you will be pretty looking back ans seeing your four years as just another high school experience.
4): Nevertheless, for the money, only about $20,000 for four years is not a bad bargain if you could not get into a top 30 ranked school. It could be worse, you could get the same degree at DU for $180,000. DU is a good school but only for Graduate studies.
5): Overall, CU is a good bargain. Excellent scenery, numerous people, and gorgeous campus. Other than that, just another ordinary school.
6): This is a very solid school. Academically challenging, fun out of class atmosphere, beautiful campus. It really has it all. Don't let the negative comments in terms of it being an "average big state college" fool you. That's not true. CU Boulder is a Public Ivy...the Ivy Education doesn't jump at you like at an actual Ivy League or UC Berkeley, but if that's what you want to get out of it, you will.
7): The student body is mostly comprised of Colorado natives, kids from California, New Jersey, andTexas. In such a large school, what you get out of it is what you put into it. The kids here will reach out and make an fort to include you, but if you decline once, don't expect them to continue to go out of their way to make you feel included in activities--especially in the cliques that form within the dorms.
8): Academic success is completely dependent on your ability to manage your time correctly and do the assigned homework--if you take the time and do your homework well there is no reason that you won't succeed. Professors are more than willing to help if you just have the guts to go up and talk to them, but if you would prer to email them, that works just as well.
9): The school is a pretty good school. It's not Harvard or Yale--or even Notre Dame or UCLA--but it's a quality place especially for Coloradans. If you're willing to spend the 30K to come here out of state, you're probably just coming here for the skiing and booze and you have amazingly wealthy parents. In fact, most out-of-state kids fit that profile: wealthy, smart, into skiing, and very, very party-centered.
10): Of course, it's a huge school with a major mix of students. Almost 40% of the student body is not from Colorado.
11): So far, most of my professors have been excellent teachers. Even the ones that seem to care only for research have been quite helpful so long as you take the time to visit their office hours and ask them questions. Also, my TA's have been incredible. Almost all are very knowledgeable and excellent teachers in their own right. I've yet to run into anyone with an accent that is out of the realm of understanding, although some have required a week or two of patience.
12): The activities are beyond amazing. Lots of club sports, intramurals, world-class skiing and rock climbing (5.14 routes a 45 minute hike from campus), hiking, mountain biking, the list goes on and on. The rec center also offers cheap introductory classes in several outdoor sports. The only thing missing is a beach.
13): There is alot of online coursework and not much homework/classwork. Most undergraduate classes have hundreds of kids in enourmous lecture halls. Professors always have office hours, but most of the time they will conflict with your schedule making them hard to meet. If you are trying to get into the buisness school be prepared to work hard your first semester. You need above a 3.3 GPA to even apply. Counselers here are not very helpfull nor do they really even care about who you are. When you go to this school you are a number not a person. Also, you will have to be ready to teach yourself material through textbooks. If you are looking for individual attention in a university this is not the place. If you dont mind being a number, CU welcomes you.
14): Most people I meet are rude and everything, and anything you here about it being like high school is true.
15): Cost of living
The cost of housing is WAYYYY overpriced. Living in a Tripple (that is three people in one room) in Crosman hall with a 19 or 15 meal plan is $4700 (the claim $4300 on their site which is a lie). Cost of the meal plan is $2100 and the room is $2600.
16): The cost of food for one semester is $2100. They charge $7 per meal for munch money. On a 15 meal plan (what I have), that somes out to 2 meals per day per week. The semester is four months long so $7 * 2 (per day)* 7(days per week) * 16 (weeks) is 1568. Where is my other $532 going?
17): If you go in for business, engineering, science, journalism, or fine art/history you are in a good place. If anything else (if it doesn't have its own school) you should go somewhere else because they are a joke.
