OVERVIEW

Canterbury Christ Church University is a modern university located in the historic and attractive city of Canterbury in south England.

As well as the facilities on the main campus, the city and all its activity is only a five minute walk away. There are currently over 15,000 full-time and part-time students studying on a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, research and English language programmes.

Canterbury is one of the best-known cities in Britain and is visited by over two and a half million tourists a year. Canterbury is situated in Kent, a county known as The Garden of England due to its attractive countryside. Canterbury is easy to reach from Gatwick and Heathrow Airports and is only one hour and a quarter by train from London. There are also regular coach services to and from London and frequent rail connections with Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Koln (via Ashford International Station). The sea, the ferry port of Dover and The Channel Tunnel car terminal are only 30 kilometres away.

Academic strengths

The University has four faculties: Arts and Humanities (including Media), Education, Health, Business and Sciences (including Computing). One of our most successful courses is the International Foundation leading to a BA/BSc. The Business School s MBA attracts an increasing number of students. Award winning students attend the MA Film Prodution. The Language Studies Department is well established as a provider of top-quality English language courses both for general (Gneral English Language courses) and specialised (Business English and MA TESOL). programmes including IELTS preparation, and for its English language teacher training programmes.

Facilities

Our comprehensive university support services include a visa and immigration adviser and a dedicated administrative assistant for international students accommodation placements. All international students are guaranteed accommodation at least during their first year. The International Office offers dedicated support for international students from admission and orientation, introduction to banks, trips to London and the main historic cities in the UK, and English Language support classes.

All students have access to a wide range of computing facilities and the university network is constantly upgraded to incorporate the latest technology. There are networked computer rooms across campus and within the University s library there is an Open Access Area providing computers with internet, email and word processing facilities, together with a quarter of a million books, periodicals, CDs, videos and DVDs.

The University has a language laboratory and a self-access centre with a member of staff available for assistance. There is a variety of listening material and a range of material for pronunciation, vocabulary development, examination preparation and grammar practice. The language laboratory contains a selection of materials for self-access learning outside regular class times. Students have the opportunity to take free classes in foreign languages such as French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Italian.

Student life

With two other higher education establishments based in Canterbury, the City has a large student population. This gives Canterbury a very lively atmosphere, which is ideal for students. The Students Union organises a number of leisure activities including a wide range of sporting activities (badminton, volleyball, basketball, karate, cricket, rugby, football, self-dence, hockey and tennis). Within the Students Union there are three societies run by international students.

LOCATION

With its towering cathedral and its rich history, Canterbury is one of Britain s most visited cities. In 1170 archbishop Thomas Beckett was murdered in the Cathedral - one of the most dramatic events in English history. Now it attracts huge numbers of visitors from around the world. In addition to its cathedral, medieval walls and many fine buildings, Canterbury is the cultural focus of East Kent with plenty of music of all kinds as well as theatres, cinemas and an annual arts festival. The city offers a range of facilities for students from bookshops and museums to pubs, clubs and wine bars. The city is a major shopping centre and as well as all the main high street retailers, there are many specialist shops. There is a range of restaurants and cafes serving many types of cuisine, and over a hundred pubs. The Marlowe Theatre provides an important dimension to the cultural life of the city, offering a programme of opera, pop, musicals, Shakespeare and contemporary playwrights.

ACCOMMODATION

International students who have accepted a firm offer of a place at the University by the first of August each year will be offered residential accommodation for the first year of their programmes. There are 14 halls of residence mostly based on the campus or within walking distance of the University. Based on a weekly rent per person, the 2006/2007 cost list for accommodation ranges from ??70-??95. This accommodation includes large residences divided into flats with resident managers on site. There is also a range of houses available which provide accommodation for four to five students. International students on language courses or summer school have the option of being accommodated in a family home. All the families are regularly visited by the Accommodation International Officer and abide by the UKEnglish Code of Practice. FACILITIES

Library and Computers

The main University library is on the Canterbury Campus and opens during the academic year (October-June) seven days a week including most evenings. During the summer it is open from Monday to Saturday.

The Canterbury Library Networked PCs are available freely during library opening hours and offer Internet and e-mail, access to the University computer network and the library network, multi-media, bibliographical and full-text CD-ROMs and a selection of online databases. One large computer room is open 24 hours a day during the whole year with access to computer in non-latin scripts (Japanese, Chhinese, etc...).

Language Laboratory

The University has a language laboratory/self access centre, used by students during and after classes, with a member of staff available for assistance. There is a variety of listening material with accompanying worksheets to choose from and all material is colour-coded so that students can find material at their required level. There is also a range of material for pronunciation, vocabulary development, examination preparation and grammar practice. Students who enrol between October and March can go to the Foreign Languages Centre and join free classes in foreign languages other than English, such as French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. The Language Centre contains a selection of materials for self-access learning outside timetabled classes.

Sport

A number of sports are practiced at Christ Church, including badminton, volleyball, basketball, karate, cricket, rugby, football, self-dence, hockey and tennis. The University has a first class gymnasium and the St George s Fitness Centre hosts regular aerobics and fitness classes.

STUDENT LIFE

Student life

The Student Social Centre is where students can relax in their spare time, enjoy a drink and snack at the bar and find out what events are taking place each week. By becoming a member of the Students Union (part of a national student organisation), discounts can be obtained on various activities such as rail travel.

Canterbury Christ Church University Students Union (or CCSU) offers a variety of services including a newly rurbished shop, laundry, vending machines and minibuses. It is an independent body run by students for students. During the day the Union building serves as a coffee shop and it operates a number of clubs and societies, ranging from rock climbing to karate through to drama and sci-fi. It also organises an annual Christmas Dinner and Summer Ball, as well as other events during the year. There is also a TV production facility on site (CTV), which vision mixes during event nights as well as covering sports fixtures and all the major balls. Students can find out about all events in The Fountain, the University newsletter.

There are also opportunities for students to participate in music events. They can join the wind and symphony orchestras, the big band and choral society. There is also C4 Radio, which broadcasts all over campus and to the off-campus halls.

Student welfare

The Christ Church Medical Centre offers to all students access to several NHS doctors surgeries as well as advice on family planning, travel vaccinations, dietary advice, an asthma clinic, emergencies and First Aid. Male and female doctors are available.

The University offers all students a free, confidential counselling service, staffed by professional counsellors. As well as working individually with students, the counselling service offers workshops on subjects like stress management, exam anxiety. Support groups are also organised for students experiencing difficulties such as eating disorder or bereavement.

Christ Church University was founded as a Christian place of learning, and although there are various societies for other faiths and belis, the University still has a Chaplaincy that aims to serve everyone at the University, be they of all faiths or none. Working closely with the Christian Union, its activities include pastoral care, worship and Bible teaching in the Chapel, baptism and confirmation as well as encouraging charity and voluntary work.

FEES ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Canterbury Christ Church recognises a variety of non-UK qualifications, which will be accepted for entry to degree, diploma and postgraduate courses. The University accepts non-UK qualifications equivalent to GCE A-levels, GCSEs.

English Language Proficiency

All students must be competent in the English language. If English is not the student s first language they must be able to show that they can speak and understand English through either the IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent.

Many international students attend courses offered by the Language Studies Department at the University for the purpose of learning English as a foreign language and English for specific purposes. The University offers the following international qualifications in English language: IELTS, TOEFL, LCCI and University of Cambridge examinations.

Students are entitled to a 5% rund on award bearing courses fees if the fees are paid in full bore arrival in Canterbury. A further rund of 10% is givfen to sibblings.
