Bangor University was founded in 1884, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious degree awarding institutions in the UK. For more than 120 years students from all over the world have graduated from Bangor and as a result gone on to achieve great success in their chosen careers.
Today, the University offers over 250 different bachelor degrees, more than 150 courses at postgraduate level and allows the opportunity for research in around 40 unique areas. Bangor is listed among the top 20 universities in the UK in eleven different subject areas which include Computer Sciences IT, Economics, Agriculture Forestry, Psychology, Chemistry, Earth Marine Sciences and Electronic Engineering.
Bangor is consistently placed in the top 50% of UK universities by leading newspapers such as the Guardian and the Times.
Academic Strengths
During the most recent UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), Bangor proved itself to be amongst the very top institutions in the UK. Each academic department which is assessed is awarded a final rating of 1-5*, with 5* being the highest. An impressive 77% of all the staff at Bangor who were assessed were placed in the top 4, 5 and 5* grades, demonstrating research of international excellence.
Outstanding teaching and academic support from professors and lecturers is a key factor if students are to succeed. The Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) is conducted on behalf of the Government to rate individual departments within universities. More than 50% of the departments assessed to date in the TQA have achieved the top rating of excellent . In the recent UK wide Student Satisfaction Survey for 2008, Bangor University was placed in the top 10 of UK universities for teaching quality, 85% of all students being satisfied with the teaching on their course.

In order to build upon the achievements and reputation of the university, over £67million has been committed to strengthen our facilities and for the recruitment of new leading academic staff.

Such is the importance we place on fective Internet access and web-based research that we not only have over 1,000 networked PC s in the university but also most of our campuses have free wireless Internet service available.
Student Life
Market research shows that the cost of living in Bangor is much lower than in other parts of the UK. According to The Independent A-Z of Universities and Higher Education Colleges, Bangor is one of the cheapest places in Britain to be a student. As a university which places great emphasis on student support, we also offer extra help to new students by funding scholarships and bursaries worth over £2.5 million. The Accommodation for Students website survey placed Bangor in the top three universities in Britain for quality of location and facilities out of 70 of the UK s leading institutions.
Beyond Bangor students can enjoy the varied and stunning landscapes of Wales itself. Wales is a country with a great deal of history and there are more castles per square mile in Wales than in any other country in Western Europe. Wales also has many areas of outstanding natural beauty with spectacular coastlines and rugged mountains. We are located close to Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham with direct trains from London and Cardiff.
LOCATION
The cathedral city of Bangor is situated on the North Wales coast in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Bangor is easy to reach from UK international airports two hours from Manchester International Airport and four hours from London.
During September arrival weekend, UW Bangor operates a meeting service at Manchester airport. Students are taken by coach to the doorstep of their new home in Bangor.
The area around the main University buildings and student housing is a student village with a sports centre, supermarket, local shops, restaurants and take-away food shops, banks and post office.
Crime rates are amongst the lowest in the UK so it s a safe place to study and its compact nature means that everywhere in Bangor is within safe walking distance.
Bangor is a very central location within the UK. Manchester and Liverpool, less than 2 hours away are great destinations for shopping, and for attending music concerts and world-class football matches.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is guaranteed for undergraduate students in their first year at Bangor. Second and third year undergraduates, and postgraduates can also be accommodated.
Over 2,000 standard or en-suite study bedrooms are available on four main residential sites, all within easy walking distance of the University buildings and the city centre.
All are single rooms and have a bed, desk, chair and bookshelves, and most standard rooms have washbowls. International students usually prer self-catered accommodation where they can prepare their own meals. Food from countries worldwide may be purchased from supermarkets and specialised food shops in Bangor.

FACILITIES
Our Colleges are well-resourced and include the rare and outstanding facility of the £3.5 million Prince Madog ocean-going research ship, nanotechnology laboratories, natural history museum, botanic gardens and agricultural land where exciting research is conducted.
Library facilities at Bangor include an extensive collection of books and journals, databases, videos, CDs, micro-materials and manuscripts collections.
IT facilities are extensive, PCs have full internet access and students have access to PC labs 24-hours a day 7 days a week. Computing facilities are constantly being upgraded so that students can benit from the latest technology. Many student accommodation blocks have been installed with data-points, which enables students to log onto the University computer network and have internet access from their own room. Every student is given a personal ID and email account.
In addition to the Main Arts and Science libraries, students also benit from six specialised subject specific libraries.
The University has its own sports centre, athletics track and sports fields providing students with good indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. Students who enjoy the outdoors have on their doorstep activities from climbing and hill walking to diving and water-sports. The National Water-sports Centre for Wales and challenging mountains of Snowdonia on our doorstep.
Bangor University is a National Coaching Foundation Centre and has its own facilities for individual and team sports such as rugby, football and hockey. Other facilities include an athletics track, three sports halls, climbing wall, squash courts, gym, CV room, gymnastics hall, tennis courts, floodlit grass pitches, and an all-weather pitch, all within the university.
There are a number of clubs within the Students Union and external community groups that students are encouraged to join in order to meet new students, make friends and get the most out of their time in Bangor. By joining these groups, students have the opportunity to meet people from other academic departments, other parts of the world and also other parts of the community.
Bangor, like the rest of the UK, is home to many different cultures and religions. Within the University, there are facilities set aside for meditation, prayer or rlection. There are also numerous religious societies which offer spiritual guidance, support and friendship such as the Christian Union and Islamic Centre.
STUDENT LIFE
The Bangor Experience is being a part of a vibrant, buzzing student scene of over 7,000 students who come from all over the UK and the world. It s a lively place where people are genuinely friendly. It has a thriving student community and active Students Union.
In a major survey into student satisfaction throughout the UK, Bangor University was awarded 1st place for the most helpful administration category and 12th place overall, giving confidence to international students they will receive a high level of support and care.
The Students Union is a membership organisation that promotes the interests and welfare of students. Membership gives students access to services and discounts. The Union runs a student travel office, a bookshop, general store, welfare advice centre, etc. During the day, the bars, lounge, restaurant and fast-food restaurant within the Union are all good places to eat, drink or just sit and chat. The Union offers entertainment most nights of the week in its new nightclub Time .
Students Union organise clubs and societies cover a range of hobbies and special interests such as Archaeology, Photographic Society, Drama Group, Chinese Association, Greek Association, Indian Association etc. Sports clubs currently include Badminton, Canoeing, Cycling, Football, Judo, K-Aikido, Sailing, Sub-aqua and Volleyball, but there are many more.
The packed and varied Diversity Week held annually offers a platform for students to celebrate their nationality and to share their customs and culture with others throughout the university.
For music lovers, there are a symphony orchestra, choirs and concert band. The Students Music Society presents concerts each term and there are stage productions, from operas to musicals. The University enjoys regular performances by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and there are occasional visits by overseas orchestras.
Bangor employs a dedicated International Student Adviser to help students with all matters relating to living and studying in Bangor. Special events are organised for International students eg weekend trips to different parts of the UK, weekend stays with UK families and local events in the community to name a few.
A meeting service is offered for all international students at arrival weekend at Manchester International Airport. Students are also met on arrival at the train and bus stations and taken to their new home in Bangor.
FEES ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Bangor University has decades of experience of making offers to international students and our experts have detailed knowledge of education systems worldwide. Applications are considered on the basis of the degree qualification, subject relevance and transcripts, English language qualification and academic rerences.
Degree courses are taught and examined in English therore students must have an acceptable standard of English language for successful study. As a general rule, all international students are required to have an English language qualification prior to being accepted. Flexible entry can be arranged, see details below.
Entry onto undergraduate and postgraduate programmes requires the following minimum English Language scores:
IELTS 6.0 (with no individual score lower than 5.5)
TOEFL 560 with a TWE (written score) of 4
Computer Based TOEFL 220
Some programmes may require higher scores.
Students are also recommended to undertake a 1 or 2 month pre-sessional English and Study Skills course in order to enhance their skills and gain confidence in their English abilities prior to the start of the academic programme.
Students who have not achieved the above scores may undertake English language courses at the University s English Language Centre (ELCOS). Further external tests are not required as ELCOS highly qualified and experienced teachers will conduct its own Bangor University recognised test.

Foundation Course
This is a 1 year course combining English language, study skills and academic study for students whose school leaving qualification is not accepted for direct entry onto undergraduate degree courses.
