Napier University is situated in Edinburgh, Scotland s capital and a major UK city. Edinburgh is a lively, diverse and vibrant city, home to a number of universities as well as exciting attractions, theatres, restaurants and shops. It is located less than one hour by air and four hours by train from London.

Napier University is named after the famous 16th-century mathematician and inventor of logarithms, John Napier, and was founded in 1964, achieving university status in 1992. In just three decades it has progressed from a first-class polytechnic to a major Scottish university with a growing international profile.

Today, Napier is one of the largest higher education institutions in Scotland with around 14,000 students studying professional and relevant courses at all levels of award in three faculties; Health, Life Social Sciences; Engineering, Computing Creative Industries; and Napier University Business School.

By offering creatively designed courses, flexible study methods and accessible routes to higher education, we equip our graduates for success in a competitive job market. Napier was recently voted the top university in Scotland for graduate level employment, and 6th in the UK (The Sunday Times University Guide Graduate Destinations)

Academic strengths

Napier has particular strengths in the fields of business, engineering, journalism and publishing, photography and film, biological and health sciences, computing and IT. The most popular programmes are in business, the creative arts, mass communications, nursing and midwifery. Recently introduced programmes in sports science, drug design and animal biology cut across the traditional boundaries in the sciences. Programmes are available full, part time and distance learning and delivered on or off campus. Over 80 per cent of our programmes are vocational, focusing on practical aspects and giving students the knowledge and skills that employers look for.

Facilities

Napier is a multi-campus university with three main sites in Edinburgh: Merchiston, Craighouse and Craiglockhart. Each campus has its own unique culture and sense of community, whilst beniting from being part of a large, modern university.

Napier has three faculties: Engineering, Computing and Creative Industries, Health, Life and Social Sciences and the Napier University Business School. Napier is rapidly becoming the most modern and advanced University in Scotland. Our Craiglockhart campus houses our state-of-the-art Business School and boasts digital multi-media language labs, a cyber-cafe and wireless internet access, all set amidst spectacular architecture. Our 500 seat Jack Kilby Computer Centre at the Merchiston Campus offers computer and internet access 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.

Student life

Edinburgh is home to a range of attractions and is host to top-class events including its world-renowned arts festival every August. There is a huge choice of entertainment from pubs and clubs to theatres, cinemas, sports facilities and restaurants. Edinburgh is an attractive and exciting place in which to live and study, and it is easy to understand why students from all over the world choose to come here.

Napier offers a comprehensive support service focused on helping all international students, and can advise on a whole range of issues including pre-departure information, visas, immigration, general welfare and employment while in the UK.

The International Officers organise orientation programmes and social events throughout the year to make sure that a students arrival and stay in Edinburgh is as enjoyable as possible.

LOCATION

Edinburgh is a lively, diverse and vibrant city hosting over four million visitors every year. There is a stimulating cultural scene with renowned festivals, art galleries and museums. Edinburgh boasts numerous theatres, historic monuments and buildings, cinemas, restaurants, bars, clubs and shops.

Scotland s dynamic capital is an exciting place in which to live and study, and is one of the most student-friendly cities in the UK. With three major universities, the Art College and several further education colleges, students make up a large part of Edinburgh s population. Rerred to as the Athens of the North , Edinburgh has long been famous as a place of learning - Charles Darwin studied medicine here and David Hume the philosopher worked in the city.

The city is also seen as the gateway to Europe - it is located just less than one hour by air and 4 hours by train from London. Budget airlines also fly directly from Edinburgh, opening up low cost and easy travel to Europe.

ACCOMMODATION

The five purpose-built developments are all in central locations and are either close to the main University campuses or on good bus routes. Students have their own bedroom, whilst the kitchen, WC, shower room and living areas are shared.

Accommodation is guaranteed to students who have a firm unconditional offer and who have submitted their application, along with a deposit payment, in time for the deadline in August. There is limited accommodation available for students starting programmes in February.

Advice and assistance in finding accommodation in the private sector is available to all students. Private lodgings are available at a wide range of prices, not controlled by the university. The average cost for a single room in a shared flat in the private sector will be around £230 £260 per month plus bills and deposit.

FACILITIES

Computing and IT

There are fully equipped learning centres at all Napier campuses. Some centres are open seven days a week during term and staff help students to quickly access the information they need. All centres are fully networked and equipped with books, audio-visual and computer equipment, CD-Rom and internet access. We also provide introductory talks and demonstrations during students first few weeks at Napier to help them get used to the systems and to make sure they make the most of the resources available.

We have excellent study spaces and resources including seven learning centres and 1,250 computers plus over 150 Apple Macs. Student computing laboratories are located at all campuses, the biggest being the 500 seat Jack Kilby Computing Centre facility at Merchiston which is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Students also have access to WiFi network connections for laptops on the main campuses, face to face IT user support and specialised software packages to support their study.

Student Support

Our Student Support Services work to help students achieve personal goals, and support physical well-being, emotional health and career progress throughout their time at Napier, from enrolment through to graduation and employment. We provide careers advice, counselling and support for those with special needs and disabilities.

English Language Provision and Support

Sport and Leisure

We work closely with Edinburgh Leisure to provide subsidised access throughout the region to a wide range of high quality sport and leisure facilities for recreational purposes. Arrangements are also in place with a number of providers in support of the activities of the Napier Students Association Sports Union clubs, and expanding academic programmes in the Faculty of Health , Life and Social Sciences in sports and related disciplines. Edinburgh boasts a number of excellent sporting venues, including an olympic-sized swimming pool, the longest dry ski slope in Europe, and sailing and windsurfing on the Forth.

STUDENT LIFE

Napier draws students from a wide social and geographic spectrum which encompasses students straight from schools across the UK, mature students who are returning to education, students whose route into higher education has been through studying a Higher National Diploma in a Further Education college and a healthy population of over 2500 international students from countries such as China, France, Ireland, India, Norway, Nigeria and the USA. All contribute to the mix that gives Napier its unique vibrant, energetic and supportive culture.

Edinburgh is one of the most student-friendly cities in the UK. With four major universities, the Edinburgh College of Art, and several further education colleges, students make up a large part of Edinburgh s population. With more and more international students coming to study in Edinburgh, Scotland s capital is emerging as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the UK.

We have International Officers who are on hand to provide advice on issues such as visas, immigration, employment and general welfare. The International Officers organise meet and greet services at the start of semester to make sure that our international students arrival in Edinburgh is as smooth as possible. A carully arranged orientation event is part of the service to welcome new students as well as an ongoing social calendar throughout the year. The International Officers also provide advice and information bore the student leaves home, when they arrive at university, and during their stay in Edinburgh.

The Napier Students Association plays an active part in student life at Napier and covers a range of social, political, cultural and course-related activities. Any student, with the support of nine others, can set up a new club or society and apply for financial assistance from the Association. International Students will also have the opportunity to join NISC (Napier International Students Club) and enjoy monthly social events and visits.

As an international student, you ll have the opportunity to experience the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people and the country s rich history, geography and culture. We will also do our best to make you feel at home. All types of religious worship are catered for in the city, and there is no shortage of specialist food shops to cater for your every requirement.

Tuition Fees for 2008/9

Undergraduate: £8600 - £9990 per year

Taught Postgraduate: £9180 - £10715 per year

Research Postgraduate: £8810 - £10135 per year

General Entrance Requirements

Undergraduate: We accept a wide range of international entry qualifications for level one, for example:

Australian Year 12 Certificate

Canadian High School Graduation Diploma (or equivalent)

Hong Kong Advanced Level

Indian 10 + 2 School Certificate (most boards with 70% pass mark)

International and European baccalaureate

Malaysian STPM or SPM and Diploma

Norwegian Vitnemal (Grade 3 or above)

Taiwanese Junior College Diploma

US High School Diploma (with SAT or ACT scores)

We also welcome applications from students who have already undertaken some further or higher education in their own country and are looking for advanced entry on to a similar programme at Napier University.

Postgraduate: A UK Honours Degree or equivalent is generally required.

Some taught postgraduate programmes require relevant professional qualifications and/or work experience.

English Language Requirements

If English is not spoken as a first language then evidence is needed that individuals can read, write, speak and understand English satisfactorily.

Undergraduate programmes

Minimum requirement: IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 527 for most programmes. Please check with the International Office for exceptions.

Postgraduate programmes

Minimum requirement: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 550 for most programmes. Please check with the International Office for exceptions.

£1,000 scholarships are available to students on full time degree programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) delivered in Edinburgh. These scholarships are open to students from Malaysia, North America, India and China. Conditions apply.

Scholarship worth up to £7,000 for each year of study at Napier University. Open to Hong Kong residents
