　　What are your SAT and ACT requirements?

　　W&M requires freshman applicants to submit either SAT or ACT scores. If both sets of scores are submitted, we will only use the higher score. For the SAT, we will use the best score on the math section, the best score on the critical reading section and the writing section regardless of the number of times the test is taken. For the ACT test, we will use the best composite score. Some students score better on the SAT, while others score better on the ACT; therore, we encourage students to take both tests. William & Mary does honor the College Board's Score Choice.

　　Should I take the TOEFL?

　　If English is not your native language, or if your schooling during the past five years or more has been in a language other than English, the College urges you to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Test. Any student who has spoken a language other than English in the home should strongly consider submitting TOEFL or IELTS test scores as they give the Admission Committee additional testing to use together with the verbal part of the SAT or the ACT.

　　Generally, the College is looking for a minimum TOEFL score of 600 on the pencil/paper test, a minimum score of 250 on the computer-based test or a minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test. If you take the TOEFL, you must still also take the SAT or ACT.

　　What is the average GPA for an incoming W&M student?

　　There is no average GPA for incoming W&M students. Academic potential is evaluated from a combination of GPA, choice of curriculum, and curriculum rigor. We evaluate an applicant's academic achievement within the context of his/her high school. Grades are weighted differently within each school system. Therore, we do not recalculate GPAs to a 4.0 scale. Likewise, rigor of curriculum is based on what is offered at that particular high school. Class rank, if provided, can be helpful in determining a student's academic potential; approximately 80% of admitted students are in the top 10% of their high school graduating class.
