Personal Statement

  Life science has been an unknown and mysterious world for me and I have always been fascinated by this field since my childhood. It is just like a maiden with misty veil. I hope that one day I could disclose it and find out the truth of life science, microbiology seems to be its breakthrough. Besides, the outbreak of SARS that suddenly occurred and rapidly spread all over the China in 2003 even more deepened my thought to further my education in Life Science. Therore, I chose Bio-engineering as my major in my undergraduate period and as the direction of my life without any hesitation. Now it seems to be the suitable time for me to involve in its specification--- Microbiology Program.

  My undergraduate study has given me wide range of systematical and comprehensive academic knowledge in both biology and engineering. I took almost all the courses related to biology, got outstanding scores in all of them, and obtained deeper understanding of this mysterious field. Some courses I took like Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Microbial Genetics, help me learn the microbial phenomenon like evolution and mutation in a precise way. Meanwhile, other courses like Cell Engineering, Fermentation engineering and Microbial Pharmacology provided me a clearer picture about the combination of upstream biological theory and the downstream production in biology industry.

  Due to my excellent academic performance,I have been awarded as “Merit Student” for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008, and got the top level of scholarship in my university every single year. What made me even more proud is that in 2008 I obtained the National College Scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Finance of P.R.China, which is awarded to excellent college students in China and I was one of the only two winners of it in my college.

  Apart from all the progress I made intellectually, my one year experience as Vice President of the Students' Union in my college provided a good opportunity to improve myself morally. Through those activities we organized to do volunteer work and collected money for those in need taught me what is sense of responsibility to the whole society; Through all of the hard work and cooperation with fellow students, I knew better about a "TEAM": Together Everyone Achieves More. Through the cooperation and communication with my fellow students, I knew better about the meaning of trust, respect and responsibility.

  In addition to the academic study, I benited a lot from the intensive biological experimental training. As a sophomore, I started to spare time and took part in some extracurricular scientific researches, some basic ones at the beginning and more complicated ones later on. After the countless weekends and holidays spent in the lab, I gradually developed an fective way of thinking which I think is a fundamental character of a potential researcher.

  Because of my fantastic performance in academic study and research experience, I was fortunate to stand out for participating in a doctoral experimental subject related to study of Streptococcus Suis in the School’s State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology, focusing on the system of metabolic regulation and its correlation of virulence for some elements of SS2. My partner is a doctoral student, named Youhui Si. Up to now, I have independently completed molecular clone of two crucial genes, including the design of primers, PCR amplification, and construction of recombinant plasmid. Besides, I forecasted three dimensional structures of target protein and core amino acid sites by way of bioinformatics and test data. In order to obtain different mutant, site-directed mutagenesis was used for target gene. And then, with combination of a series of purification and identification for mutant protein, I could determine the fect of target gene in the process of metabolic regulation system. After that, we used RT-PCR to confirm our conclusion and made it clear that the particular gene had a significant level of expression in ss2 using fluorescence quantitative PCR method. What’s more, I have also assisted my partner in conducting animal experiments with recombinant Streptococcus Suis, studying changes of physiological index. We hope that through analysis of animal’s pathogenesis, we could find out the mystery of other creatures, even human body so as to solve the worldwide puzzle.

  When looking back, I always feel fortunate that I chose this field of pathogenic microbiology, for it has always been my dream ever since 2003, the unforgettable year for me when I made up my mind to do something to eradicate the horrible infectious diseases that have been torturing humans for thousands of years.

  Back then, I was in high school. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) broke out and spread all across China, which made me witness with my own eyes the fearfulness and terror of infectious disease and lt deep impression on me as well. At that time, my hometown was located in the epidemic area. I can’t find one person in the lively street and the city looks empty in just one night. People who have not experienced that disaster can’t imagine it. What’s more, unfortunately, one of my father’s friends, Li Jiangang, was infected by SARS. He was quarantined and no message could be heard. What we can do is to wait. Although he recovered through active treatment, not everyone had that luck. Until now, helplessness and wandering at that time came clearly into my mind. It planted in the depths of mind the inexplicable and complex emotion. Although the epidemic situation of SARS was controlled temporarily, there are a series of pending questions for us to explore and research, such as, where on earth does the virus of SARS come from? How to prevent it from infecting more people? People all over the world are still suffering from epidemic diseases like flu, Hepatitis B and AIDS. Therore, there is still a long way to go for me to go in this field to realize my dream, but I will never give up trying.

  I believe that, just as several basic physical laws sustain the whole universe, there must exist simple principles, which describe the complex biological system. I will study microbial genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular microbiology from different angle of view and investigate a series of biological problems from fundamental biological problems including environmental sensing and cell-cell signaling, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, secretion, energy generation, and the bacterial cell cycle to mechanisms of virulence and host-parasite interactions. With the application of a wide range of emerging technologies in molecular genetics and cell biology, we could put these biological technologies into a more wide of fields and find out the secret of biological world through our forts.

  My ultimate goal is to explore the pathogenesis of diseases and find out the secret of molecular microbiology by integrating traditional molecular biology approach with more powerful modeling, analysis. Moreover, I hope I could be a good researcher and make my contribution in the field of animal and human infectious diseases and eradicate such horrible diseases like SARS through my forts with thousands of other researchers.
