More than 100 Years of Art and Design Excellence
Founded in 1896, Parsons The New School for Design has cultivated outstanding artists, designers, scholars, business people, and community leaders for more than a century. Famous alumni include Donna Karan and Norman Rockwell.
As part of The New School, a leading university located in the Greenwich Village section of New York City, Parsons embraces curricular innovation and global perspectives on the future of design. The program's location in New York City, a global center of art and technology, places students at the forront of emerging trends
Leading-Edge Design Education
Although Parsons offers rigorous training in more than 25 specialized areas of study, no one program is isolated from the others. Students are encouraged to take courses from all or any of Parsons' 5 schools: the School of Design Strategies; the School of Art, Media, and Technology; the School of Art and Design History and Theory; the School of Constructed Environments; and the School of Fashion.
Parsons strongly promotes technology skills development in all its programs. Students master computer graphics, computer-assisted design, interactive multimedia, digital imaging, and a host of other technological tools.
A Wide Range of Degrees in Design Strategies
Undergraduate degrees offered by Parsons School of Design Strategies include a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Design and Management, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Environmental Studies, a BS in Urban Design, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Integrated Design.
A Unique Emphasis on the Business of Design and Environmental Impacts
Students explore design fields and industries while completing a business program. Business problems unique to design industries are examined. For example, training includes the design lifecycle, managing creative projects, and identifying opportunities for innovation.
Environmental studies, administered by the Tishman Environment and Design Center, emphasizes urban ecosystems, sustainable design, and public policy.
The School of Art, Media, and Technology
Degrees offered by Parsons School of Art, Media, and Technology include an Associate of Applied Sciences (AAS) in Graphic Design; 5 Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees including communication design, design and technology, fine arts, illustration, and photography; and 3 Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees including design and technology, fine arts, and photography.
BFA programs offer an exciting and comprehensive experience in studio practice, contemporary art ideas, and community and global interaction. Undergraduates explore color, texture, and form to find their own individual voice.
MFA programs explore the design implications of emerging technologies and the evolving connections between technology, design, and the human experience. The curriculum integrates critical discourse, theory, experimentation, and hands-on production.
The School of Art and Design History and Theory
Most art and design undergraduate students begin their education with the Foundation year. This program ensures that students have the necessary methods, materials, and technical and problem-solving skills for success in BFA programs.
Parsons, in conjunction with Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, also offers a 5-year BA/BFA dual degree that combines art and design studies and liberal arts with a studio major.
The school also offers Master of Arts (MA) degrees in Fashion Studies and in History of Decorative Arts and Design. The fashion studies master's program builds careers in fashion research, academia, and culture. The history of decorative arts and design master's program trains the next generation of decorative arts and design historians, curators, and authors.
The School of Constructed Environments
The School of Constructed Environments addresses the social, economic, and ecological vitality of today's urban habitats. Departments in the school include product, lighting, architecture, and interior design. The interior design program is the oldest in America, started in 1906 by the school's namesake, Frank Alvah Parsons.
BFA degrees are offered in product design, interior design, and architectural design. MFA degrees are offered in lighting design and interior design. Students may earn a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)-approved professional Master of Architecture (MArch) degree.
A dual-degree graduate program combines the MArch and MFA in Lighting Design.
The school also offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Interior Design. The program is best suited to students who have had some prior college experience, are clear about their interests within the world of design, and are prepared for rapid immersion in a professional course of study.
The School of Fashion
The home of America's first fashion design program, Parsons School of Fashion alumni have created the highest level of clothing design in the last century. The school helped establish New York City's Seventh Avenue Fashion District as the epicenter of American fashion.
Degrees offered by Parsons School of Fashion include an AAS in Fashion Design, an AAS in Fashion Marketing, a BFA in Fashion Design, and an MFA in Fashion Design and Society.
The school's AAS programs explore the relationships between design, merchandising, and marketing. Students learn the process, skills, and language of fashion design and marketing.
Students earning a BFA degree learn each stage of fashion design including concept development, studio methods, fashion drawing, and fashion digital studio environments.
One of the school's newest programs -- the MFA in Fashion Design and Society -- is the first graduate program of its kind in the nation, training fashion designers with a multi-disciplinary, cultural, and global understanding of fashion.
On-Campus Living and Activities
Parsons The New School for Design has 3,800 undergraduate students and more than 400 graduate students. Parsons is part of The New School, a leading university with a total enrollment of more than 10,000. Of these, about 1,680 reside in one of the on-campus residence halls or graduate student apartments. All new undergraduate students, particularly first-time freshman, are encouraged to live on campus during the first year.
Parsons is connected to all New York City has to offer: its culture, its history, its opportunities, and its energy. The New School provides plenty of
