When preparing for tests, students often spend long hours looking over practice tests and cramming vocabulary, but did you know that a lifelong reading habit is correlated with higher test scores? It would seem to make sense, given the prevalence of reading sections on standardized tests and the increasingly verbal orientation of math sections. A habit of reading can develop text analysis and reading comprehension、 vocabulary、contextualization, and memory. It may not seem like it,but reading complex texts will help a student prepare for university better than any vocabulary book.
Reading can also help with writing sections. Writing sections often ask students to justify their claims with examples from history, literature, or the news. What better way to collect a deep reservoir of such examples than reading in-depth about them? Reading will, simply put, make you a more interesting, knowledgeable person, and improving your test scores will be but the first of many benefits.
So, now you are convinced, but don't know where to start.
— — First , set aside at least 30 minutes a day for reading. Soon you'll find that you don't have to force yourself and you'll look forward to your daily reading sessions.
— — Second, pick the right kind of material. Magazines, newspapers, and online forums are a type of reading, but they do not require the same level of understanding as books. Try to vary your material between fiction and non-fiction, and ask your friends and teachers for suggestions of what books to read. Learners of English may find a book to be quite daunting, but if they choose books written for a teenaged audience or books that they have already read in their mother tongue, they should soon be powering through books they never dreamed of conquering.
So,what are you waiting for? To the library!
