I like playing basketball and writing Chinese traditional calligraphy, these two habits of mine had big influence on my childhood, and they also accompanied me transiting from childhood to adulthood.
I was not born to like calligraphy, I just started to practice as my father told when I was still a little boy. Since first grade, I was sent to training class for calligraphy learning every Sunday. Like most of the boys, I would prefer hanging out with friends outside instead of practicing alone and being watched at home, however I had to practice two hours per day besides taking class. I felt my life was in dark and I even hated my father for quite a while. Looking back now, I was too young to understand my father’s intention. I gradually realized that my handwriting looked much better compared with other students in the school, even now. I felt a sense of pride when I received a compliment from my class adviser, and that was also the moment I started to believe in a saying which goes like” no pain, no gain”. After that, I constantly attended calligraphy competitions from 6
thgrade to 10
th grade and obtained some awards and approval. At the same time, deeply, I appreciated that my father was so strict to me and I understood that it was for my own good.
I was that kind of boy that doesn’t like to talk too much, acted shy and tended to introvert. I went to school alone in the morning and went to back home alone after school. I was invisible and my life was boring. Until one day, my eyes were sparked when I saw other boys playing basketball, just for watching, I fell in love with it. Since then, I joined them after school to play basketball, I have to say I really like this game, and I enjoy the challenge of competition, teamwork and friendships that inevitably evolve from this activity. During the past 10 years, this sport has brought me a lot of unforgettable experiences and pure happiness. Basketball games played an important role on my personality shaping. If not because I started to play basketball since primary school I probably still will be a timid boy who always standing at corner, afraid of even a little challenge.
I think it is right to say that we learn things from our past. I gained many precious treasures through practicing calligraphy and playing basketball, such as persistence, team spirit, and communication skills. Now I am looking forward to gain more treasures in the future to continue on my path of adulthood.
